Horizon

Poetry Chapbook (Flower Press - 2021)
Finalist for the Perennial Press 2022 Chapbook Awards

Horizon walks the imaginary line between borderlands and enchantments. This long poem highlights an imagined experience of the American Southwest in place of a physical reality. Its six sections meander through not only the New Mexican desert but also the canyon of the soul. Distinctions disappear as humans, nature, and the divine converge under the setting sun.

Ler Horizonte

My eyes are misty mornings
full of salty freshwater tears
making streams that make
rivers that make canyons
on my brown, dusty face.

High noon and a high, hot
gold spot that I want to touch
with my sweaty hands. My dirty
claws scratching at the ground
of blood-red clay or at my eyes
with their tinted veins and views.

Review from Briefly Write

"Landscapes can be hard to tell apart. In her debut chapbook, Jasmine Flowers orients, disorients, re-orients - and thoroughly entertains her reader.

The long poem starts with voices ‘as they mingle in the wind’. Within two dozen pages, the reader traverses stars, miracles, ‘time, dirt, bone, wind, ash’, a fountain of youth, a leaky pipe and ‘the inkblot borderline’. The journey is as dizzying as you might expect."
